Privacy Policy
Letter To Future Self collects only what it needs to do one job: keep the letter you write and email it back to you on the day you choose. This page explains what we collect and why, who helps us, how long we keep it and what you can ask us to do. If anything is unclear, write to us (see "Contact" below).
Who runs this service
Letter To Future Self is run by an individual who uses the name Ultarthinker and lives in Ukraine ("we"). You can reach us at support@appshub.net .
What we collect and why
- Your email address. To check that it is yours (we email you a 6-digit code), to send your letter to it, and to remember that you unsubscribed.
- Your letter. The text, the delivery date you chose, the time you wrote it and your time zone. To store the letter and deliver it at the right time.
- A note of your agreement. Before a letter is sent you tick a box. We store, together with the letter, which version of the Terms of Use and of this policy you agreed to.
- Technical data. Our web server records the IP address, the time, the page requested and the browser type of every request. Our application keeps short technical notes (email addresses in them are partly hidden). We use these to keep the service secure, stop abuse and fix faults. Web server records are kept for 14 days and application records for 30 days.
- Data in your browser. A confirmation token, so that you do not have to confirm your email address again, and your sound preference. They are kept in your browser's local storage on your own device, not in cookies, and they are not used to track you. You can remove them at any time in your browser settings.
- Visit statistics. We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to count visits to the home page, the articles and these legal pages: pages viewed, referring site, country, browser and device type. According to Cloudflare it does not use cookies and does not track individual visitors across sites. It is not loaded on the confirmation and unsubscribe pages, and it never receives your email address or the text of your letter.
Why we may use your data
We use your data because you agree to it, which you do by ticking the box before you send a letter, and because it is needed to give you the service you asked for. For server records and security we rely on our legitimate interest in keeping the service safe. You can withdraw your agreement at any time by asking us to delete your data; this does not change what we did before.
Who receives your data
- Amazon Web Services (Amazon Simple Email Service, in the United States) sends our emails: your confirmation codes and your letters.
- Hetzner Online GmbH hosts our server in Germany, where letters are stored.
- Cloudflare provides the visit statistics described above.
We do not sell your data, we do not show advertising, we do not build profiles of you, and we do not give your letters to anyone else, except where the law requires it. Because the Amazon email servers we use are in the United States, your email address and your letter pass through the United States when we send them. Amazon says that it protects such transfers with recognised safeguards, for example the EU-US Data Privacy Framework or standard contractual clauses.
Who can read your letter
Letters are stored on our server as plain text. They are not end-to-end encrypted, and we do not promise encrypted storage. Connections to this site are encrypted (HTTPS). Only the people who run the service can reach the database, and we do not read letters except where it is needed to run the service, investigate abuse or a fault, or obey the law. Please do not put passwords, payment-card numbers, health records or other secrets in a letter.
How long we keep your data
- Letters are kept until they are delivered, and afterwards until you ask us to delete them, or until we end the service.
- After you unsubscribe your address stays on a short "do not send" list, so that we never email you again.
- Server and application records are kept for 14 and 30 days, as described above.
- Backups. We keep backup copies of our database to recover from a disaster. If you ask us to delete your data we delete it from the live service promptly; copies in backups can remain until those backups are replaced.
Your rights
You can ask us to show you the data we hold about you, to correct it, to delete it, to limit how we use it, or to give it to you in a portable form, and you can object to our use of it or withdraw your agreement at any time. To use any of these rights, write to us from the email address you used for your letters, so that we can be sure it is you. We aim to answer within 30 days. You also have the right to complain to the data protection authority of the country where you live.
Children
The service is for people who are 16 or older. It is not intended for children, and we do not knowingly keep data about children. If you think a child has used the service, write to us and we will delete the data.
Changes
We may change this policy when the service changes. We will update this page and its effective date, and we will try to tell people who have letters waiting by email when a change matters to them.
